The rise and fall of Colonel Muamar Gadaffi

Hizi habari bado ni utata.
BBC wana hiki kipande.

A rebel spokesman was quoted as saying the downed jet was a rebel plane which had been shot down by pro-government forces.

BBC News - Libya: Gaddafi forces attacking rebel-held Benghazi

Je West na US wanachochea civil war?

french fighter jets flying over Libya
French fighter aircraft are policing a no-fly zone over Libya protecting the rebel stronghold of Benghazi, Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, has said.

World leaders met in Paris on Saturday to discuss UN-sanctioned military intervention in Libya where forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi, the country's long time leader, are battling opposition forces.
Speaking after the talks, Sarkozy said that French aircraft were ready to strike at fighter aircraft and tanks belonging to Gaddafi's forces that might be used to attack civilians.

But he said that the fight in Libya belonged to the Libyan people.
"If we intervene on the side of Arab nations it is not to impose on the Libyan people, but because of a universal conscience hat cannot tolerate such crimes," he said.

"We do it to protect the civilian population from the madness of a regime that, but killing its own people, has lost any legitimacy."

Elungata umesika maneno ya Pres. Sarkozy? By the way wewe sijui geography imekupitia wapi distance ya France na Libya haiitaji mid air refueling besides that wakitaka kurefuel watatua Malta au Italy ambazo ziko umbali wa maili 200 kutoka LIbya.

Full transcript of President Sarkozy's comments, made a few minutes ago.

Together, we have decided to ensure the resolution of the Security Council demanding an immediate ceasefire and the stopping of fighting in Libya. The participants have agreed to apply all means necessary, in particular military ones, to respect the decisions of the UN Security Council.

"That is why in agreement with our partners, our air forces will fight any aggression on behalf of Colonel Gaddafi against the population of Benghazi. Our planes will prevent aerial attacks on the town. Other French planes are ready to intervene against tanks who would threaten civilian people.

"From yesterday, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Arab countries have sent to Colonel Gaddafi and to the troops that he employs the follow warning: in the absence of an immediate ceasefire, and failing a withdrawal of the forces that have attacked the civilian population over the last few weeks, our countries will resort to military action.

"This warning was repeated by all the participants at the summit that has just concluded. Colonel Gaddafi has disregarded this warning. During the last few hours his troops have intensified their deadly offensive.

"Arab countries have chosen to free themselves from the slavery in which they felt themselves trapped for too long. These revolutions have created an enormous hope in the heart of all those who share the values of democracy and the rights of man.

"But it is not without risk. The future of these Arab people belongs to them. In the midst of all the difficulties and challenges that they have been faced with these Arab populations need our help and our support and it is our duty.

"In Libya, a civilian population which is passive which requires nothing further than the right to choose itself its destiny finds itself in danger of life. We have a duty to respond to its angst-ridden call.

"The future of Libya belongs to the Libyans. We do not want to take a decision on their behalf. The fight that they are undergoing is their's. If we intervene on the side of Arab nations, it is not to impose on the Libyan people, but to apply to a universal conscience that cannot tolerate such crimes.

"Today, our intervening in Libya with the mandate of the UNSC, with our partners, namely our Arab partners, we do it to protect the civilian population, and to protect it from the deadly madness of a regime which by assassinating and killing its own people has lost any legitimacy. We intervene to allow the Libya people to choose itself, its destiny.

"It cannot be prevented from these rights through terror and violence.

"There is still time for Colonel Gaddafi to avoid the worst by agreeing unreservedly to all the requirements of the international community.

"The door of diplomacy will reopen when the fighting will stop. Our determination is total, and I say it with solemnity. Everyone now finds themselves faced with their responsibilities. It is a serious decision that we have been forced to take, together with our Arab partners, our European partners, our North American partners, France has decided to take up its role in front of history."

Gaddafi's Forces Facing Modern Firepower
Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's ramshackle Libyan air force appears to be no match for the international forces heading for the region.

The International Institute for Strategic Studies estimated, despite a nominal strength of some 200 fixed wing aircraft, fewer than 40 are actually capable of flying.

Most are old Russian-built types dating back to the Soviet era and are obsolescent in Western terms - although Col Gaddafi does have a small number of more modern French Mirage F1s.

The Libyan regime does have some more effective anti-aircraft defences.
They include a long range surface-to-air missile system thought to be within 30 to 40 miles of Benghazi, which could pose a threat to international air patrols if it is not taken out.

On the ground, Col Gaddafi's fear of a possible military coup has meant that he has largely tended to keep the army weak.
The best equipment is concentrated in the hands of two brigades commanded by his sons.
That includes the 32nd Brigade - equipped with relatively modern T72 tanks and self-propelled guns.
The unit crushed rebels in the western town of Zawiyah and has been spearheading the attacks on the western city of Misratah.

The most commonly seen vehicles on both sides are the ubiquitous "technicals" - pick-up trucks modified to carry heavy machine guns and a variety of other weaponry.

Up against Gaddafi's forces are sophisticated Western fighters like the RAF's Tornados and Typhoons.
The Tornado GR4 ground attack aircraft could be used to suppress the Libyan defence or mount strikes against ground forces.
Its arsenal includes the air-launched anti-radiation missile, which homes in on the emitted radiation of enemy radar systems and can be used for the suppression of air defences.
The Typhoon is deployed mainly as an air superiority fighter and could use its air-to-air missile systems to bring down any Libyan aircraft which defy the no-fly zone.

They will be backed up by VC10 air-to-air tanker refuelling aircraft and E-3D surveillance aircraft already in theatre which will provide airborne monitoring of land and sea.
There is speculation that they will be supplemented by Nimrod R1 reconnaissance and electronic intelligence gathering aircraft.

Hivi wanalazimisha Ghadhafi apinduliwe.

Tunapozungumza "unafiki" basi mtu anayefuatilia kinachoendelea basi ni wazi hawa West na US ndio Nambari moja. Wako juu kabisa wala hawana mpinzani.

Hivi haya hawayaoni sasa hivi?

Mwalimu Nyerere alizima Uasi 1964.
To their ambarassement ,Only to see Chavez restored to power.

wanachochea wairani huko Irani. Hawa wamezidi tena kwa " maslahi yao."
Msimamo wangu. Na katika kufanya hilo there is a price to pay. Wanaporuhusu West na US kuwawekea vibaraka huwa wamerudi "ZERO".
Mfano upo hai, Afghanistan na Iraq.

Moammar Gaddafi appeared on Libyan state television for less than a minute to dispel rumors that he had fled.

This is a developing story. The events unfolding point to one eventuality. Gadaffi's days are numbered!

"...if (Gadaffi) doesn't leave, the Libyan people will get rid of him." - Dabbashi, Libyan deputy UN ambassador.

Update: Gaddafi speech. Still defiant!
