platozoom,

Hawa tayari washapita mchujo maana hamna wa kuwapinga:

A number of outgoing MPs were spared the nomination headache because there were no opponents to challenge them in the primaries.

They included Wiper national chairman David Musila who is gunning for the Kitui senator's seat, Dr Boni Khalwale (senator, Kakamega), Fahim Twaha (senator, Lamu), George Khaniri (senator, Vihiga), Mohammed Affey (senator, Garissa) and Wilbur Otichilo (MP, Emuhaya).

Former Kerio South MP Nicholas Biwott was also cleared to run for the senator's seat in Elgeyo Marakwet county by his National Vision Party.

I don't need Kibaki support,says Wambui

KTN's James Smart interviewed TNA aspirant for Othaya parliamentary seat Mary Wambui on post-Kibaki politics in the constituency and here is the transcription by Moses Michira.

Businesswoman Mary Wambui is betting on her long behind-the-scenes political career to win TNA nomination today in her quest to become the next Othaya MP. The controversial political activist is, however, fighting a strong tide after the first family endorsed Gichuki Mugambi for the position despite her central role in campaigning for the outgoing legislator in past elections.

Wambui recently survived the first hurdle in the battle for the seat after the High Court trashed a suit challenging her eligibility to contest filed by four petitioners, who were questioning her integrity and education.

She rose to national prominence after her daughter Winnie Mwai was associated with the infamous Artur brothers saga, and the subsequent investigation that linked her to the international fraudsters posing as senior police officers.

QUESTION: What is the situation in Othaya before the TNA nominations?
ANSWER: It is good and the people do not want anyone to interfere with the nominations. Since I was in Kanu, I have worked with the people of Othaya and I am confident they will elect me because they do not need to be told who is good for them. They know whom they want as their MP.

QUESTION: How do you feel after the suit challenging your suitability was thrown out?
ANSWER: I pray for the people who wanted to scuttle my bid to be an MP and I am happy the judges did their work. The case was political.

QUESTION: What is your relationship with the President?
ANSWER: Kibaki is my MP and my President. I know him but on the family level, that is my private life. But then the country knows the truth about me. I have five children but our culture does not allow us to name the children. I would not want anyone to use Kibaki's name in bad light because he loves peace and he is also a nationalist.

QUESTION: Have you sought the President's blessings in this race?
ANSWER: Othaya people do not need to be persuaded by anyone, that is why I do not need the blessings of anyone in this campaign.

QUESTION: Who is funding your opponents in this race?
ANSWER: I don't know, but all I want is the mandate of the Othaya people because I want to work for them.

QUESTION: Should you get the nomination, do you expect Kibaki to campaign for you?
ANSWER: I am up to the challenge in the elections. I am not sure I will need him to campaign for me.

QUESTION: How different would you as an MP be from Kibaki?
ANSWER:Kibaki has done a lot to help the people of Othaya and the nation at large. I will finish the porjects he started. There are challenges in the coffee sector and unemployment is high. I do not want to see any bright students failing to go to university.

QUESTION: You have been a national figure, will you shift your focus to Othaya only if you are elected?
ANSWER: I would still maintain national outlook because I have been working with people from all over the country. I look forward to help in empowerment of women and youth. Othaya will set an example nationally where we want all medical services to be free in all hospitals.

QUESTION: What would be your role as a national leader?
ANSWER: I will seek to have factories set up across the country, not just in Nairobi, to create employment. I have been to several parties – Narc activist, PNU, and now TNA. I know many people who have joined TNA because of me.

Smatta, Kabaridi,

I had a question for you guys that I seek clarification on. In regards to the Presidential candidates, if they lose
the election do they just become regular chaps ama vipi? In the previous elections the sitting President was
also an area MP na mtu akishindwa kura anabaki kua MP kama vile Raila in Kibera.

How is it this time around?

Mkuu this time around is tight and tough for those who fail to make it to their preferred seat. let me quote the new structures befor I can give my comment

Kenya's central government is structured through the constitution with administrative and policy making powers being distributed to its three arms namely Executive, Legislature and Judiciary. However, the current structuring is being replaced by a revamped new governance system following the recent adoption of the new constitution.

Executive

Being by far one of the most crucial arms, it consists of the following primary members:

President
Deputy President
Cabinet Secretaries
Attorney General
Director of public prosecutions

The Legislature

national assembly
senate

The Judiciary
Supreme Court
Court of Appeal
High Court
Subordinate courts/kadhi courts

PS do not mistake the above national government hierachy for county governments, there is also a structured county government which consists of county assembly and county executive. County assembly will have its own speakers at county level and county executive/Governer will excersice part of the executive command at the county level.

County government

county executive (headed by a governor chosen through ballot)
county assembly (headed by an appointed speaker by the county assembly)
**The Proposed Constitution requires that the President
and Deputy President be elected as running-mates. In
the event of a vacancy in the office of the President, the
Deputy President may also assume Presidency for the
remainder of the term.

**The Proposed Constitution provides that the President
and Cabinet Secretaries will not hold any other state of-
fice. This implies that both the President and Cabinet
Secretaries will not be Members of the Parliament.

For once in the history of kenya The seats for elective postions are entreched in the current party structures, party lists, and politcal parties under chapter seven of the constitution. For instance let us take TNA/JUBILEE..President is kenyatta but he cannot vie for MP for gatundu. Same to Raila in CORD and DP kalonzo. So the aspirants that I have mentioned are squaring it out for a postions of president and deputy president under EXecutive dreadfully one loses they go home according to the above quoted structures.

Parliament/legislature is further divided into two i.e. independent authorities organs; senate and the national assembly each with a speaker means the legislature will have two speakers one for the national assembly and one for the senate. For gubernatorial positions it is either a candidate runs for governer or senator or womens rep via competitive means i.e balloting!. Those that vie for these postions can't vie for member of parliament. A highly devolved government which each organ independent not forgetting there is also an independent judiciary.

Now the interesting thing to note here is that there is also the IEBC that is provided by chapter 7 of the new constitution. This commission unlike ECK can never be disbanded for either pressure or political reasons from the international community. The other provision from chapter 7 are the political parties list, political parties, electoral disputes court, run by a supreme court.
That is it guys i tried to simplify to my best but I hope it will serve you Ab-titchaz and crew

TNA moves primaries to Friday

The National Alliance (TNA) has extended its primaries by a day following a delay in delivery of nomination papers to polling centres.

TNA chairman Johnson Sakaja said among other issues, the party received the registers "very late" cutting out some areas in the country from participating in the voting.

"We have to extend our nominations until tomorrow (Friday) mainly to ensure that we have a process that is above reproach and that is free and fair," he said during a press briefing in Nairobi.

He explained that they got the register at 3pm on Wednesday and it took them long to print the ballot papers causing a delay in delivery of the voting documents to all centres.

"It would have been easier to go and agree – cut papers and vote. But we wanted to have a certain degree of quality to do it right," Mr Sakaja said.

The documents were flown to some centres and delivered by road in others.

"The voting will start at 6 am and by 3 pm the counting will start," he said while apologising to party members and urging them not to get discouraged.

The party is expected to release a comprehensive list of the centres affected by the delay.

Mr Sakaja moved to allay fears that the delay would create an opportunity for those who would try to rig the elections saying that the certificates will be issued upon the completion of the party primaries.

"I would like to assure all our members and candidates that there are no favoured candidates and there is no one who has a direct certificate, including the Deputy Prime Minister and flag bearer does not have his yet. Even those who are running unopposed have not received theirs yet," he said.

"As a party, we were fully prepared; we have done a by-election before and were the only party that did a nomination process. But since we got the documents late and it was beyond or control, we did not want to compromise the process and have a sham nomination," Mr Sakaja said.

Earlier at the TNA Secretariat in Nairobi, former Embakasi MP and Nairobi Governor aspirant Ferdinand Waititu blamed the delay for delivery of the nomination papers on the printers.

At about 11am Thursday, loaders packed papers into trucks which were being dispatched to centres in Nairobi, Laikipia, Kisii, Murang'a, Nakuru and other locations.

Mr Sakaja denied that the delay was a tactic to woo over late defectors from other political parties.

"We have been honest in the manner in which we have conducted our affairs and would not like to play underhand games especially to our members," he said.

However, he added that aspirants have until midnight tonight to join their team.

Nairobi, Kenya: Former Town Clerk Philip Kisia's name may not appear in the March 4 ballot even after defecting from ODM to Federal Party of Kenya (FPK) as the Cord alliance is determined to field one candidate in Nairobi.

Kisia Thursday ditched ODM has it emerged that he had failed to apply for the Orange party's ticket to contest the Nairobi governorship against Dr. Evans Kidero. He had also failed to pay aspirant's fee of 200,000 shillings.

While defecting, he claimed money had been used to interfere with the nomination process saying although he was a paid up life member of ODM, he wanted to be sure on the fairness of the process before paying the aspirants fee.

FPK party leader Cyrus Jirongo confirmed that Cord alliance leaders will hold discussion with a view of fielding one candidate in both Nairobi and Mombasa.

"Cord had announced a plan to hold joint nominations in Nairobi and Mombasa but this has not taken place and thus there is room for arbitration," Jirongo said while receiving Kisia at the party headquarters in Nairobi.

Cord presidential nominee Raila Odinga and his running mate Kalonzo Musyoka are expected to meet Thursday evening to harmonise a list of nominees in Nairobi, Mombasa and other swing vote areas which will be presented Friday at the IEBC.

A 'rapid response team' had also been appointed to negotiate within the alliance parties on one common candidate per seat.

Kisia will be granted a senior government appointment if Cord win so as to step down for Kidero who will run alongside Jonathan Mueke of Wiper as his running mate.

Discussions were underwayThursday evening to convince former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru who was knocked out of the governorship race due to questions on the credibility of her academic degree contest for the Nairobi women representative seat.

Just like in Nairobi, Kalonzo's Wiper was to nominate Ali Hassan Joho's running mate for the Mombasa governorship post after the outgoing Kisauni MP got nominated unopposed.

The Raila Odinga presidential secretariat announced on its social network, twitter, that Ali Hassan Joho (Mombasa-governor), Dr. Evans Kidero (Nairobi-governor), David Musila (Kitui-Senate), James Orengo (Siaya-senate), Gitobu Imanyara (Meru-senate) and Ramadhan Kajembe (Mombasa-senate) had already been nominated.

At the same time, Mzalendo Saba Saba party has accused TNA of poaching their Kigumo parliamentary aspirant illegally.

In a letter to TNA and copied to the registrar of political parties Lucy Ndung'u dated January 16, Mzalendo Saba saba said that Lawrence Mburu Memia is a bona fide member of the party.

"We are protesting to your office for including our candidate for Kigumo parliamentary nomination to be held on 17, Jan 2013," National Organizing secretary Stephen Gathuo wrote to TNA. The nominations were pushed to Friday.

An official search at the Registrar of political parties indicates that Memia from Muranga County is listed as Mzalendo Saba Saba member number MSS344456.
If the aspirant is struck out, then Nairobi Metropolitan Minister Jamleck Kamau may benefit from the technical error and get an automatic TNA nomination to defend his Kigumo parliamentary seat.

In Nairobi, outgoing Nairobi mayor George Aladwa joined Dr Kidero in securing the ODM nomination to fly the Cord flag in Makadara constituency. Aladwa went in unopposed.

Former LSK chairman Okong'o O'Mogeni dreams of becoming the Nyamira senate were boosted as he was cleared in ODM to contest the seat.

By Thursday evening, it's only O'Mogeni who had been cleared for the Nyamira senate position on ODM and Cord ticket by extension. The former LSK boss is a close ally of both Raila and Kalonzo.

Earlier, Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka had hired three choppers to ferry ballot papers and boxes to far flung areas were the nominations exercise had been delayed due to lack of the materials.

ODM's Kidero is almost certain to face stock broker Jimnah Mbaru whose nomination as a TNA candidate is all but assured. Mbaru's competitors Ferdinand Waititu, according to TNA sources will be barred from contesting due to queries over his Punjab college degree while John Gakuo will be requested to either become Mabru's running mate or seek another position.
