The period between 1980 and 1990 was a period of intensive Muslim agitation against the government and increased activity. Muslim initiated several organisations to further their development.
After the Warsha-government crisis of 1982, the crisis left BAKWATA severely bruised and even more dependent on the government.
BAKWATA was totally isolated from Musims.
There were many correspondences from BAKWATAto the government requesting the government to ban Warsha and Masjid Quba and Islamic Centre and also requesting it to prevent independent leadership in mosques.
Muslims were electing anti BAKWATA leadership in their mosques.
BAKWATA reminded the government of its importance to control all mosques for the sake of ''peace and tranquillity.'' [1]
Whenever these confidential letters were intercepted, Warsha circulated them to Muslims throughout the country.[2]
This exposed BAKWATA even more as a puppet of the government which was fully under the control and influence of the Church.
Muslims increasingly turned more militant and defiant.
The government was advised by the Intelligence to allow several youth organisations to beregistered and be allowed to play limited role in Muslim politics with the hope to create polarisation among youths and diffuse the tension.
This, the government believed would give BAKWATA as well as the government some breathing space.
A youth organisation Tanzania Muslim Youth Association (TAYMA) was registered but when Warsha sent its application for registration it was refused.
TAYMA's leadership was nothing out of ordinary and pursued a policy of conformity to the wishes of the government.
TAYMA however was able to built a schooland carry out several activities in the interests of Islam and Muslims of Tanzania.
Few youths were attracted to it perceiving it as conformists organisation allowed to exist in order to appease and hoodwink Muslims.
TAYMA'sleadership was untested, had no experience on how to deal with the ChrIt was overly co-operative to the Christian dominated government and BAKWATA.
TAYMA soon died a natural death for lack of Muslim support.
Muslim youths believed the only Muslim organisation fit to lead them was Warsha because it had the intellect, the will and the experience to confront the enemy.

It partly explains why Nyerere lifted the ban on civil servants joining Tanu after he had become Tanganyika's first president."

Mundungus Fletcher, shukrani nyingi zikufikie popote ulipo...how I wish all people would look at things with an open mind like yours but sadly, this aint possible. How I wish all Tanzanians following this debate would do so with an open mind but unfortunately, this wont happen. An open mind is comfortable with differences and with a variety of lenses makes it possible to view issues from different perspectives. Without an open mind the eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend...the eyes see only closed doors and is blind to many others that are wide open.
As Alexander Bell put it, "When one door closes, another opens. But we often look so regretfully upon the closed door that we don't see the one which has opened for us. Mwalimu Julius Nyerere as a leader opened so many doors for us but people with closed minds like Mohamed Said could only see those that, to them, appeared closed. People like Mohamed Said do a great disservice to a Society, they plant seeds of distrust and hatred among innocent young people without realizing it is the work of the demon in them that drives them to do so.
A closed mind blocks reason, blocks curiosity but worst of all blocks ordinary common sense, it diminishes the desire to seek knowledge, restricts perception and turns a human being to an equivalent of a zombie. Truth and falsehood become so intermingled that it becomes hard to separate fact from fiction and the earlier this is implanted in ones mind, the harder it is to believe anything different. Mohamed Said, having been indoctrinated by ideas from those close to him right from childhood, studied hard and knew exactly how to win who, what and when.
Mohamed Said is a victim of his own creation...the man actually really believes that he is a victim of Mfumo Kristo and a liberator of the oppressed, the Muslim community, and has a following to prove it. The delusion in his mind places him above all and anybody who does not agree with or dares challenge him is under the influence of the dreaded ogre, Mfumo Kristo. He earnestly believes he is fighting a holy war and I can bet anybody, there is nothing anybody else can do to remedy the situation unless he led the exercise himself.
God help Tanzania if ever this maniac gets his wishes for there is a very thin line separating his ill motives from those of the likes of Hitler or Osama bin Laden. Good thing is he is now well past his prime though the seeds he has planted may still flourish for a little longer...I give thanks to all those who have stood firm to call his ill motives and I still have trust in the people of this nation...the same way they rejected division along tribal and religious lines in the past, they will reject this evil endeavor that threatens our country's peace and stability.
God help Tanzania, God help the people of Tanzania!

[TD]The Association had reorganised its administrative machinery at the headquarters and had included several Kenyan nationalists in its executive committee.
This had a special significance to the colonial government.
The political situation in Kenya was tense.
Mau Mau were having skirmishes with government troops.
On 20th October, 1952, the colonial government in Kenya, failing to control Mau Mau guerilla activities, declared a state of emergency.
Kenyatta and the entire KAU leadership were arrested and detained.
On 8 th April, 1953, they were sentenced to seven years' imprisonment with hard labour.
The inclusion of Kenyan nationalists in the TAA leadership was, therefore, a cause of concern to the colonial governments in East Africa and TAA was, as a result, closely watched.
The Kenyan nationalists were all considered Mau Mau suspects.[1]
Whether the Special Branch was also aware that Abdulwahid had made contact and met the Mau Mau leadership in 1950 is still open to speculation.
But if one is to go by the belief that TAA's confidential files were surrendered to the colonial government at a price by one of its executive staff, one can conclude that Abdulwahid's contact with Kenyatta was known to the government. We shall return later to discuss this episode. [/TD]

[TD="width: 752, bgcolor: transparent"]Nyerere had barely finished reading Abdulwahid's handover notes when, on 1 August, 1953, the colonial administration published Government Circular No. 5 banning African civil servants from politics. [2]
Legally, of course, there was no political party in Tanganyika. The Governor did not need to go to the Registrar of Societies to check the simple fact; it was known the Africans in Tanganyika had not gone beyond formation of welfare associations.
But the government was forced to react in the way it did because of developments after 1950 when the Makerere intellectuals took over the TAA.
The government decided to react against TAA because it was aware of its political character. Since 1950 when Abdulwahid and Dr Kyaruzi assumed power, TAA headquarters began to capitalize on the social discontent in the country in order to legitimise its own existence in the eyes of the people of Tanganyika. [/TD]

[TD="width: 752, bgcolor: transparent"]The formation of the Political Sub-Committee in TAA, its involvement in the Constitutional Development Committee of Governor Edward Twining and in its submission of proposals to the government and its conduct in the Meru Land Case smacked of behaviour typical of political organisations.
The colonial government was also aware that Mwapachu was in contact with the Fabian Society and was contributing radical articles to The Sentinel and was exchanging correspondence with ultra-leftists of the Labour Party in Britain. In his capacity as the secretary of TAGSA, Ally Sykes had established contact with the Secretary-General of the Pan African Congress of Northern Rhodesia, Kenneth David Kaunda. [3]
Abdulwahid had met the Indian High Commissioner to East Africa in Nairobi in 1950 in his official capacity as secretary of TAA.
The colonial government was probably aware that since 1950 Abdulwahid and Ally were in constant contact with the Asia Socialist Conference and its Anti-Colonial Bureau.
This behaviour by the Association and its leadership had transformed it into a de facto political party.[/TD]

[TD="width: 752, bgcolor: transparent"]By the time Nyerere was taking over leadership of TAA, Governor Edward Twining had ample evidence of TAA's involvement in politics and the circular which the government had issued was to check this new development.
Up to that moment no one could accuse Nyerere of meddling in politics, even with his election as president of the TAA. If the government had wanted it could have interdicted almost the entire leadership, save Nyerere and a few others, and banned TAA.
The circular therefore threatened the very existence of the association and its direction. Most of the educated Africans who were in the civil service left the Association.
Remaining close to Abdulwahid, Nyerere and TAA were a few die-hards-Ally Sykes, Dossa Aziz and John Rupia. [/TD]

[TD="width: 752, bgcolor: transparent"]Abdulwahid risked losing his job as Market Master at the Kariakoo Market.
Being a missionary employee, Julius Nyerere ironically, was not affected by the circular, although as we shall see later, his leadership of the popular mass movement was in contradiction to the stand of the Church on the African politics.
The political movement which had existed in Abdulwahid's mind from the end of the World War II when he was in Burma serving under the British command faced premature death. It was obvious to Abdulwahid that the TAA leadership and the future of Tanganyika faced a do-or-die situation.
They could either succumb to threats and nip the movement in the bud, or stand up against the government and face whatever would be the consequences.
After assessing the political climate and making the necessary consultations with the TAA inner circle, (Abdulwahid, Ally, Tewa, Dossa, Rupia, Nyerere and the elders), TAA leadership at the headquarters resolved to stand up to the colonial government.
In an unprecedented gesture, TAA declared itself a political party working for the development of the people of Tanganyika. Further more, it called for a dialogue with the colonial government.
TAA President Julius Nyerere wrote a letter to Governor Edward Twining which in part read:[/TD]

The greatest scam ever perpetrated against Muslim in Tanzania is the introduction of "WARSHA" - a pseudo intellectual organization. The masterminds of this scam are three individuals who at the time (in 1981) were at the helm of this organization... Njozi, Dau and of course Mohammed Said. For over thirty years their 'research findings' have been used unchallegend and unquestioned to instill a sense of 'injustice' system in Tangania tailored against Muslims in Tanzania. Unfortunaly, some uneducated, and ill-informed youth have fallen victims of this scam and they believe with their very cores that Muslims in Tanzania have systematically been discriminated by President Nyerere and the government... Until now...

Niliwahi kusema toka mwanzo kuwa ni Gavana Cameron aliyeamua kuwa wafanyakazi waafrika nao wawe na association yao kama ilivyokuwa kwa Waasia na Wazungu na hivyo Afican Association ikazaliwa mwaka 1929, kiongozi wake mkuu akiwa Mwalimu Cecil Matola, kwa misingi iliyowekwa na serikali ya Kikoloni.
Mohamed Said akaja na hadithi yake ya kutoka Burma na kwamba African Association na baadaye TANU zilianzia huko huko Burma, wabunifu wake wakiwa carrier corps wazulu, wamanyema na wanubi kwenye jeshi la Wajerumani.
Niliwahi kusema kuwa baada ya AA kuzinduliwa na mkutano wake wa kwanza kufanyika nyumbani kwa Raisi wake Mwalimu Cecil Matola, Governor Cameron akawapa chumba ndani ya nyumba ndogo aliyoijenga mtaa wa New Street.
Mohamed Said akaja na hadithi kuwa hiyo nyumba ni ya wazee wake kama alivyosimuliwa na baba yake Addulwahid Sykes aliyeshuhudia kila mwisho wa juma ujenzi wake kila alipofuatana na baba yake.
Niliwahi kumuuliza Mohamed Said kama anajua kwa nini mtaa ule ulipewa jina la New Street na kama kawaida bado amekwepa kutoa jibu, anajua jibu lolote atakalotoa litazidi kumuumbua alivyo muongo mkubwa...
Huyo ndiye Mohamed Said, ambaye kwa muda wa miaka 15 amepata mteremko wa kuhubiri uongo kwa watu wasio na uelewa wowote na wao kumwamini lakini sasa kapotea stepu kweli kweli kwa kuingia kwenye anga za JF!
