[TD]About two-thirds of East African Muslims reside in Tanzania[1] which is the most populous of the East African countries, i.e. Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

This includes Zanzibar-a predominantly Muslim country with a 99% Muslim population and once the centre of Islamic
learning in East and Central Africa.

This, at that time, meant that Tanzania was a leading Muslim nation South of the Sahara.

But in the first post-independence census of 1967 the total figures for Tanzania Mainland were 32% Christian, 30% Muslim and 37% local belief.

These figures show Pagans as a leading majority in Tanzania.

The 1967 census has not been able to show the reasons for the sudden decrease of Muslim population nor the growth of animists amidst believers in the span of the last ten years.

This was the last population census showing religious distribution.

It is widely believed that the figures for the 1967 census were doctored for political reasons to show that Muslims were trailing behind Christians in numerical strength.

There is evidence that the government in 1970, having realised that Muslims were a majority in Tanzania, directed the Statistical Department to destroy all the 1967 census results.

[TD="width: 752, bgcolor: transparent"]Unfortunately power sharing in the political system in Tanzania is very much skewed against Muslims, although it is known that the stability of any nation depends on proper balancing of these factors.

Different sources provide different Muslim-Christian religious distribution figures.

These conflicting figures are as a result of sensitivity of the issue.

Among African countries with sizable population of Muslims and Christians, like Tanzania and Nigeria,[3] the inquiry as to which faith commands a leading majority, is a source of potential conflict and controversy.

Tanzania is of no exception. D.B. Barret
[4] gives figures which shows Muslims as a minority in Tanzania.

The Muslim population is purported to be 26%, Christian 45%, local belief 28%. Tanzania National Demographic Survey figures for 1973 put Muslims in Tanzania slightly above Christians at 40%, Christians 38.9% and local belief 21.1%. But according to Africa South of The Sahara,
[5] Muslims in Tanzania are a leading majority at 60%. This figure has remained constant in all its publications since 1982.

Since research by Tanzanian Muslims on Islam is scant or almost non-existent, the issue of Muslim population has yet to be tackled from an Islamic point of view.

[TD="width: 752, bgcolor: transparent"]Distribution of authority and power sharing is a factor which should not have been a cause of conflict in independent African countries.

Ironically this has become a point of controversy only under indigenous governments.

It is a sensitive issue because ethnicity, religious identity and clanship is an important factor in independent African states.

Power distribution and numerical strength has also to be reflected in the sharing of political power along those lines.

During colonial rule, distribution of power under ethnicity and religious bias in Africa by colonising powers were not perceived as so serious a breach of trust by subjects as to warrant civil upheavals.

Fortunately tribalism is not pronounced in Tanzania, but religion has been a factor of discrimination since colonial days.

Wanajamvi, baada ya kulitolea ufafanuzi suala la jedwali la Mohamed linalohusu sensa 1967 siku za nyuma tuliamua twende mbele na mnakasha.

Kwa bahati mbaya au nzuri vijana wa Mohamed kwa kutoelewa wamekuwa wakilisema sana bila kujua wanamvua mavazi.
Niliamua kutowajibu kwasababu tuna lugha tofauti na viwango tofuati vya ufahamu.

Kinachonifanya nirudi kuelezea jedwali kinatokana na ukweli kuwa pamoja na kumuonyesha Mohamed tatizo na kosa la takwimu zake, ima haelewi au anaelewa na anafanya makusudi kuwachagiza vijana warushe matusi.

Katika kufanya hivyo ameonekana kuwashukuru sana wale vijana ambao hakika nukuu zao na ufahamu wao ni wa kiwango cha mtaani kama nitakavyonukuu mbeleni.

Kwahiyo kupitia Mohamed Said ambaye tunaweza kuongea lugha moja anapoacha ''kuoga mtoni na watoto na kuwashangilia'' kwa hisani narudi tena mjadala wanyuma na niwieni radhi.

Kwanza tuangalie historia ya sensa. Tanzania imewahi kufanya sensa mwaka 1967,1978,1988,2002,2012 kama takwimu ni sahihi.

Pili, matokeo aliyochukua Mohamed ni ya mwaka 1978,1979,1980. Endapo angetaka kupata uhalisia wa idadi na asilimia kwa kuangalia waislam ilibidi atumie sensa ya mwaka 1978. Kwasababu asizoeleza alitumia sensa ya mwaka 1967.

Kwa utafiti na takwimu hapa ametumia values mbili ambazo hazipo katika muda mmoja.
Idadi ya watu huenda ikibadilika na kigezo kizuri cha kufahamu hilo ni kutumia the most recent data kama alizotumia mwaka 1978,79,80 kupata idadi ya wanafunzi.(nitafafanunua kuhusu variation ya population huko mbele).

Kwa yeye kurudi nyuma na kuacha sensa ya mwaka 1978 tayari alikuwa biased na utafiti unakuwa na ''fraud''.Haukufuata kanuni.

Kwa maneno mengine hii ni sawa na kutumia takwimu za mwaka 1980 kujua watanzania wangapi wameathirika na malaria au ukimwi mwaka 2000.

Katika mstari alioanza na NB Mohamed ameonyesha wazi kuwa total selected ilikuwa ni jumla ya waislam na Wakristo.
Hapo ameondoa watu wa imani nyingine kama wahindi, wapagani na wasioamini.
Kwa maelezo yake makundi hayo hayakuwa na wanafunzi waliochaguliwa!

Data za Mohamed amezichukua idara ya elimu ya jiji la Dar es Salaam. Inafahamika kuwa Dar es Salaam ni metropolitan na kwahivyo kuna mchanganyiko wa makabila, rangi na imani tofauti.

Haiwezekani wanafunzi waliochaguliwa wawe wakristo na waislam tu. Hii maana yake ni kuwa hiyo percentage si kweli kwasababu yeye ametumia wakristo na waislam kama 100%.

Tulimululiza Mohamed(Warsha) ni kigezo gani kilitumika kujua huyu ni mwislam na yule ni mkristo. Hakuwa na jibu.
Katika nchi kama Tanzania Juma, Zawadi, Bahati, Upendo, Mariam, Yusuf, wanaweza kuwa upande wowote ule.

Lakini pia wapo akina Mariam au Miriam, Juma au Jumanne ambao kwa mapenzi yao wamerithi majina ya bibi au babu. Sasa hiyo 100% ya waislam vs wakristo ina uhakiki gani(verification).Na kwamba ni kweli mtu akiitwa Jumanne au Khamisi, tatu au pili ni mwislam na hawezi kuwa mkristo au kinyume chake.

Hatukuishia hapo tukamuuliza je Kasuku Ngunangwa, Chausiku Musika, Mkele Mhina wao walitambuiliwaje kwa imani zao.

Tukiangalia sampling, Mohamed amechagua Dar es Salaam. Kwa kuzingatia hili ni jiji watu wanaingia na kutoka.
NI vipi aliwezaje kupata uhakika kuwa hao ndio wakazi wa Dar es Salaam.
Kwanini asifanye sampling ya mikoa miwili au mitatu zaidi ili kuweza kupata data zinazoakisi hali ya nchi nzima.

Kwa mtafiti serious sampling ingeweza kufanywa Dar es Salaam, Tabora, Bukoba , Tanga na Songea kwa kuzingatia kuwa yeye alikuwa anakusanya data tu kutoka katika idara za elimu na wala si kufanya utafiti wa mitihani kwa uhalisia.

Na mwisho wa jedwali amesema sensa ingeakisi idadi ya wanafunzi kwa kuwa na waislam wengi waliochaguliwa kwa vile sensa hiyo inaonyesha idadi ya waislam katika jiji ni kubwa kuliko wakristo.

Hapa ni mwendelezo wa kosa lile lile la 100% Muslims Vs Christians.

Hata hivyo asichoelewa Mohamed ni ukweli kuwa idadi si kitu kinachokwenda sambamba na ubora.
(Quatity is not necessarily direct proportioanl to Quality).

Inaweza kuwa hivyo endapo
1. Wanafunzi walioandikishwa darasa la 1 walimaliza la 7
2. Wanafunzi hao walipata elimu bora kwa kulinganisha na minority
3. Wanafunzi hao waliingia katika chumba cha mitihani.

Hivyo hoja ya kwamba idadi ya waislam ilikuwa kubwa na hivyo kupaswa kuakisi waliochaguliwa ni mufilisi na haina mashiko. Ni hoja iliyojengwa kwa fikra za mtaani zaidi ya weledi na elimu.

Na mwisho, Mohamed hakueleza kwanini alitumia takwimu za mwaka 1978-1981. Upo uwezekano takwimu hizo zilichukuliwa mahususi kabisa ili kukidhi haja ya matakwa ya ''tafiti'' ambayo hadi hapa tunaona ni namba na wala si tafiti au takwimu.

Mohamed, Mwambie Ami kuwa takwimu ulizotumia ni distribution population ya mkoa wa Dar es Salaam na siyo nchi kama ulivyoandika.

Unless kama ulimaanisha ni nchi, Kupungua kwa distribution population ya waislam kunaweza kuwa kwa aina mbili.

1. Kuongezeka na 2. Kupungua.
Kitu cha muhimu kuelewa hapa ni percentage. Hakuna mahali ulipoonyesha kuwa kulikuwa na majanga yaliyopunguza population kwa kiasi cha kufikiriwa.

Hili ni tatizo la kuchukua data kati kati tena bila maelezo. Kwa mantiki hiyo Population iliendelea kuongezeka au kubaki ilipokuwa kutegemeana na mazingira ya wakati unachukua data 1978.

Percentage ya popoulation ya waislam (distribution pop) kwa mwaka 1978 inaweza kuwa iliongezeka.

Mathalani, kama waislam mwaka 1967 walikuwa milioni 6.7(67%) ya 10 Million(total), mwaka 1978 wangeweza kuwa milioni 10.

Mwaka 1978 total population ikaongezeka na kuwa milioni 20.
Ukifanya kwa percentage waislam watakuwa 50%.
Hapa wameongezeka kwa idadi lakini wamepungua kwa percentage.

Lakini pia kwa kutumia hesabu hizo hizo kama idadi ya watu mwaka 1978 ilikuwa milioni 20 na waislam kwa ujumla wakawa milioni 15, kwa percent idadi ya waislam ingekuwa 75%.Imeongezeka kwa idadi na percentage

Hii ndiyo maana ya uwezekano wa idadi kuongezeka au kupungua kama nilivyoeleza hapo juu wakati nikimjibu kijana wako.

Mnachanganyikiwa kwa vile mnaangalia namba tu humuangalii namba hizo zina alama gani na alama hizo zina maana gani. Total na percentage zina maana sana.Kwa vile mind set zenu ni uonevu uwezakano wa kuona vitu kama hivi unavia sana.

Kwa vile mumesha ji-tune na kuelewa kuwa mnaweza kuongea namba bila kuhjiwa na jamii yetu huko mitaani na vijijini,basi mumejishahu na kudhani kila kitu kitakuwa maua ya rose.

Swali linakuja kwanini kuwepo na ongezeko au punguzo distribution population.
Kuna sababu nyingi sana zikiwemo za kijamii na kiuchumi.

-Kuna uwezekano mwaka 1967 waislam wa Dar hawakupenda kwenda mikoani na mwaka 1978 wakaenda huko.

-Kuna uwezakano wafanyakazi wa kiislam na wanafunzi walienda nje ya mkoa kutafuta masilahi baada ya 1967

-Kuna uwezekana wakristo, wasio na dini na wapagani ikiwa ni pamoja na wahindi walihamia Dar kwa wingi katika muda tajwa.

-Kuna uwezekano waislam hawakufanya jitihada za kueneza dini(daawa) kwa makundi yaliyohitaji msaada kuwa waislam

-Kuna uwezekano waislam wengi wai ritadi na kujiunga na dini nyingine

-Kuna uwezekano fertility rate ya jamii fulani imeongezeka au jamii nyingine imepungua

Hakika sababu ni nyingi zinazoweza kufanya distribution population kubadilika.
Hizo nilizotaja ni mifano tu kwa uchache, yawekeana zipo nyingi sana ambazo sikuweza kuzigusa.

Mwambie kijana wako kuwa athari ya majanga katika population inaweza kupunguza percentage ya expected population kwa wakati fulani na si lazima ipunguze total population as whole.

Kama expected total population ya jamii kwa mwaka 1978 ilikuwa iwe 20 milion kutoka milioni 12 za 1967, na kutokana na njaa mwaka 1973-74 watu kiasi fulani wakafariki, kutokana na hiyo impact yake inaweza kurudisha population kuwa milioni 19. Hapa kunaongezeko lakini kuna punguzo la perecent kwa kiasi fulani.
Sio suala la kudhani tu kuwa natural disaster ndizo zinapunguza population.

This, at that time, meant that Tanzania was a leading Muslim nation South of the Sahara.

These figures show Pagans as a leading majority in Tanzania.

The 1967 census has not been able to show the reasons for the sudden decrease of Muslim population nor the growth of animists amidst believers in the span of the last ten years.

This was the last population census showing religious distribution.

It is widely believed that the figures for the 1967 census were doctored for political reasons to show that Muslims were trailing behind Christians in numerical strength.

There is evidence that the government in 1970, having realised that Muslims were a majority in Tanzania, directed the Statistical Department to destroy all the 1967 census results.

[TD="width: 752, bgcolor: transparent"]Unfortunately power sharing in the political system in Tanzania is very much skewed against Muslims, although it is known that the stability of any nation depends on proper balancing of these factors.

Different sources provide different Muslim-Christian religious distribution figures.

These conflicting figures are as a result of sensitivity of the issue.

Among African countries with sizable population of Muslims and Christians, like Tanzania and Nigeria,[3] the inquiry as to which faith commands a leading majority, is a source of potential conflict and controversy.

Tanzania is of no exception. D.B. Barret
[4] gives figures which shows Muslims as a minority in Tanzania.

The Muslim population is purported to be 26%, Christian 45%, local belief 28%. Tanzania National Demographic Survey figures for 1973 put Muslims in Tanzania slightly above Christians at 40%, Christians 38.9% and local belief 21.1%. But according to Africa South of The Sahara,
[5] Muslims in Tanzania are a leading majority at 60%. This figure has remained constant in all its publications since 1982.

Since research by Tanzanian Muslims on Islam is scant or almost non-existent, the issue of Muslim population has yet to be tackled from an Islamic point of view.

[TD="width: 752, bgcolor: transparent"]Distribution of authority and power sharing is a factor which should not have been a cause of conflict in independent African countries.

Ironically this has become a point of controversy only under indigenous governments.

It is a sensitive issue because ethnicity, religious identity and clanship is an important factor in independent African states.

Power distribution and numerical strength has also to be reflected in the sharing of political power along those lines.

During colonial rule, distribution of power under ethnicity and religious bias in Africa by colonising powers were not perceived as so serious a breach of trust by subjects as to warrant civil upheavals.

Fortunately tribalism is not pronounced in Tanzania, but religion has been a factor of discrimination since colonial days.

Kuendeleza mfumo wa kibaguzi katika elimu kama ulivyoachwa na wakoloni.
Wakoloni wa kijerumani ndio walioanzisha mfumo wa kuwabagua Waislamu katika elimu baada ya kushinikizwa na makanisa. Ushahidi wa mashinikizo hayo unaweza kupatikana katika rejea zifuatazo: Cameroon and Dodd 1970:56, Kurtz1972:19, Smith 1963:16. Hatimaye kutokana na mashinikizo hayo serikali ilikubali kufaya yafuatayo:-

i. Kuwafukuza kazi Waislamu waliokuwa serikalini na kuwaingiza Wakristo (Tazama Cameroon and Dodd1970: 25, 56, pia Roland 1970:205).

. Kujenga hoja kwamba Waislamu kwa asili yao si watu wa kuendelea na kuwa ni wavivu. Tazama E.B Castle 1966:37 ambaye anasema, " Islam hinders progressive attitude to change in society and a community that accepts Islam is less likely to advance in social welfare and education", yaani Uislamu ni kikwazo cha fikra za maendeleo na mabadiliko katika jamii, na kwamba jamii ikiukubali Uislamu haiwezi kamwe kupiga hatua za katika ustawi wa na elimu. Pia Abel Ishumi 1980:208 anasema, "From the beginning Muslims were opposed to western type formal education", Kwamba Waislamu walipinga elimu. Pia Abel Ishumi 1981:43, "Muslims believe highly in fatalism" Kwamba Waislamu wanabweteka na kuamini kwao kuwa mambo yameshakadiriwa..
