It comes down two important ingredients for running a business enterprise: Leadership and a workable business model. The airline was founded in 40s with the help of Americans who continued to run the airline until early 70s. The first Ethiopian to run the organization was an insider who started as a pilot and found his way to the top through hard-work and excellence.

With regard to the business model, the airline primary target is Africans. It understands what Africans travelers want and the way to serve them. More importantly, it has learned to operate in very difficult conditions. For example in 90s there was a civil war in Ethiopia to topple dictator Mengistu. Instead of closing its business, the airline moved its operations outside Ethiopia, continuity of business operations.

Excellence in running organizations is a tradition that passed from one generation of leaders to the next one. In Tanzania, there's no such traditions. Business leaders are appointed for political reasons and what's worse they don't have business experience to run viable business entities.

Take for example ATCL. It was formed as a symbol of the nation. Since other nations had airlines, we thought we should have one. It sounds good on paper and for national pride but that isn't the way business is run. Business serves customers and if you don't know your customer then it will be difficult to run a business that sustain itself.
