livefire whatever happend to kuppet, is it a dead animal?

The last i heard about it i think it was being criticized for being a pro-govt outfit infact cleverly engineered to weaken KNUT. i believe it doesn't have the balls to face off with KNUT though. When the strike come shooting; they will effectively be forced to support KNUT else it looses its members; to me its a dead movement.

hehehe 😛ray2::coffee::coffee:
last time I saw KNUT and kuppet competing for the spoils in the name of memberships. Too bad that still the teachers have not been proposed a framework for negotiations like the MPs who can fight for their increased perks while encapsulated within the language of law. Teachers however still prefer the old street running battles to make their point. haven't Industrial courts have been reformed Couldn't the CJ's portfolio be tasked with more other than just determining fraudulent election petitions.

such scenes of paralyzing normal school time is becoming common, who burden is this

The extent to which the lower house is exhibiting gluttony is surely saddening....i mean they have an ambiguous way of raising there own salary by simply saying *NEIGH* or *AYE*.
Someone once told me judges apply the principle of common sense or natural justice in this case social justice to make binding rulings, cant they fix these mongrels for us? That's the epitome of judiciary reform if it ever happens. How do they (MPS) threaten to disband a constitutional body? This guys can take Kenyans to hell just to have there perks.

Talking about industrial courts, they are the most single handedly daft institution i know of; no mockery to them but all cases handed to them since time in memorial have always been in favour of govt, be it teachers, doctors, civil servants......its as a result to this that teachers resort to marching to the streets, nurses, doctors, lecturers in tow. Let it be clear that all this quarters react this way whenever parliament approves there own pay hike. A pattern known to govt. Why cant the industrial courts or High Court intervene at the behest of govt/kenyans to overturn this payments. U would also love for parliamentarians to demonstrate.lol.
Hii judiciary is cold n hot; they can never unilaterally approve a pay hike for the common mwananchi...since time in immemorial they've been at it, siding with govt. To circumvent this hurdle, a 21 day notice of a pending strike is usually given after formal engagements fail .....i might miss one or two things on statutory law buh gez thats the idea of what happens or a lawyer can clarify. My friend tells me hii ni korti bandia, hehe
If any lost time is accrued by the govt, let it show leadership by instilling discipline on parliamentarians (REM MANIFESTO?)....even better our budget has a big hole, with the debt ratio to relative GDP levels being too high BEYOND ACCEPTABLE LEVELS. A dim economic outlook for us with the ever increasing wage bill.

MPs to amend Constitution in push for pay rise

By James Omoro

Members of the National Assembly may amend the constitution as the last option to secure the higher pay that the Salaries and Remuneration Commission and the public have opposed.

Mbita MP Millie Odhiambo said MPs are set to amend sections of the Constitution that describes them as State Officers, so that they can free themselves from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission's mandate.

Speaking during relief food distribution to flood victims at Ogando Primary School in Mbita Constituency, Ms Odhiambo said: "Serem should revisit the decision because it seems her commission is not aware of the financial burden MPs have in discharging their duties."

She claimed the Sh532000 salary stipulated by the commission was even less their expenditure in a single weekend whenever they visit the constituencies.

She said MPs are bearers of almost all problems which face their constituents hence they need better remuneration.

"When a constituent's wife is detained by parents due to lack of dowry, floods are affecting them or any sort of problem, first person to be called is the area MP. The scenario is common all over Kenya since we usually compare notes and our expenditures per weekend range between 250,000 to 300,000," she added.

Odhiambo reiterated that she was not advocating for any salary increment but her aim was to ensure the salary they used to earn in the tenth parliament is maintained to salvage them from inflation currently hitting Kenyans.

The legislator opposed plans by some of her colleagues to dissolve the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

"Disbanding the Commission is like killing a mosquito with a harmer that may end up destroying other things which are not part of the problem," Ms Odhiambo added.

She said there was likelihood of MPs amending a section of the Constitution which defines them as 'State officers' to stop being subjected to the SRC's salary regulations.

The Salaries and Remuneration Commission was constituted to regulate salaries of State officers.

This time the mps are taking it too far by putting the cart before the horse. i suggest there be a determinant that evaluates their productivity to approve increase in perks by virtue of there perfomance at the grassroot level. The excuse I heard is there are new first-term mps that lived in areas like mathare A$ and other tin-sheds that need to be 'comfortable' inorder to serve. need loans to acquire SUVs/car allowance (that seems reasonable), house allowance, entertainment allowance, health allowance, fuel allowance, hardship allowance and all these allowance cr@p* which good thing is that by controlling both houses govt can pospone the propasal to increase perks
,
in Tanzania it is the opposite, an MP is judged by how productive they are and not how much money and how hard they campigned to get into office. TZ mps earn even less but they serve their constituents in sevices like provision of availabilty of clean water, and other services. me thinks kenyan Mp know that the mwananchi has no system/representation to require demands not forthcoming.
...in mature democracies the constitution defines the right to assemble. popularize workshops to demand more from these MPs. Otherwise a petition filed by the common man to the high court might hit a brick-wall. can't raise petition fees running to plus 1 million ksh lol!
.......shouldn't it also be the prerogative of every kenyan to safeguard and uphold the constitution on issues that touch them rather than be dragged to defend power-struggles orchestrated by ethnic kingpins.
It is a good thing that retired president kibaki revamped an economy that had nearly collapsed and put it on the right path but also left too many holes uncovered, excessive graft unchecked, lofy govt spending are some of the challenges that if unchecked will ensure vision2030 fails. plus those opportunists at treasury need to be watched carefully...

At times Mr. Kabaridi am ashamed of being a Kenyan, am ashamed i wasted my ballot putting this greedy lot to parliament; instead of putting my welfare at heart just watch them soil the constitution they swore to protect. My worry Kabaridi is that these lot though with JUBILEE being the dorminant side, they all are greedy. You heard Mr. Aidan duale tell us in comparable slang, "MTADO WHAT"? Ati if they greedy we greedy n some crappy talk. I wouldnt trust Jubilee or CORD in this.
Wheres Mr. PRESIDENT and D.PRESIDENT. I saw the deputy president talk about the PIC & PAC committees, why not talk about these mongrel lot that defiles the common mwananchi left and right?
Btw i agree that we should have a body that approves the perk increase in terms of performance and service delivery....but we have SRC, i want it to do exactly that. I dont want another body; this is nailed to the constitution, difficult to abolish and difficult to curtail its powers else with need for a referendum....i don't want another body.
Am not an alarmist but the ONE MILLION MARCH will happen very soon. I see there colleagues in county assemblies are getting rogue too, ati downing there tools...... We the mwananchi will put them out of business, wacha akina OMTATAH PREPARE THE WAY. I hate it that this politicians made Kenyans fight in 07/08.
What happened to them offering service to me; didnt they know there perks before campaigning? TIME all Kenyans walk the talk and march.....From NAIROBI, KISUMU, MOMBASA, NAKURU, ELDORET, KITALE, NYERI, MURANGA, THIKA, BUSIA, BUNGOMA, KAKAMEGA, NAIVASHA, KWALE, GARISSA, MANDERA, TURKANA....ALL COSMOPOLITAN TOWNS AND VILLAGES. A collective voice will instill discipline from the county rep, governor, MP, women rep, and senators. I believe this is what you mean by responsibility in protecting the constitution at the grass root level.
we need our country back, Mr President better fight for us coz he is the last sole silent voice that can bring these political elite to reality. That the common mwananchi literally suffers paying taxes and instead of devt some elite eat half of the monies in the name of salaries. Political leadership was never meant to be a roadmap to riches but rather a service to the nation.
OKIYA OMTATA, KNHRC, MAKE MAGIC HAPPEN.
I don't believe those allowances are reason enough, they want a SUV, they will be entitled to it but only to new entrants to parliament.
I seriously envy the Tanzanians at times, there leadership is selfless and not greedy. The kshs. 1million is an obstruction to justice by the high n mighty. Kenya is headed to the dogs if we don't right some things and soon. It just shifted gears to cruising speeds. I agree, Treasury will be another goldenBerg if unchecked.
Out of topic: I see u reactivated TEA membership, that place is full of life about Kenya but they hardly analyze the political risks of certain actions.....they call it balls of steel, strictly military with a foreign aggressor/adversary in mind 24/7 never mind the romanticized EAC/somalia stuff (like playing chess)...SIN on the other hand posts anything they waft there nose to, esp on internal affairs....

These people are a joke, who forced them to be MPs? They knew what was in store for them. Why did they go a head and run for these positions? Those who don't like the pay should resign.

MPs sign secret petition for Sh1m tax-free salary and big allowances

Deputy President William Ruto talks with Emgwen MP Alex Kosgey during an induction workshop for lawmakers at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi on Friday. The MPs want their salaries increased to the level enjoyed by lawmakers in the last Parliament. By CAROLINE WAFULA cwafula@ke.nationmedia.com

In Summary
· Deputy President warns the move may be unpopular and could lead to strikes
· Legislators threaten to paralyse government operations if their demands are not met

Members of Parliament have started a new push to increase their salaries to the level enjoyed by lawmakers in the last Parliament.

The MPs signed a resolution asking the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) to restore the pay of the 10th Parliament and what was set by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission annulled.

The MPs have threatened to frustrate operations of government and its institutions if their request is ignored, terming the current salary structure an insult to the institution of Parliament.

They have piled up pressure on the PSC, which caters for their welfare, to push for their demand. They want the commission to get them a salary that "befits the status of an MP."

Meeting in Nairobi on Thursday, the MPs also want to be exempted from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission's pay structure.

Under the new salary structure, governors will earn Sh640,681 while senators and MPs will earn Sh532,500.

The MPs have signed a resolution that PSC will use to negotiate better terms with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.

Among their options is that PSC negotiates to reinstate their perks to Sh851,000 which was paid to MPs in the last Parliament.

But speaking at a Jubilee parliamentary group meeting on Friday, Deputy President William Ruto advised lawmakers to be cautious on their agitation for salary increment.

Insiders at the meeting at Safari Park said Mr Ruto advised that the lobbying for pay was not good for the country given the state of the economy currently, adding that other workers were likely to follow suit.

However, Tiaty MP Asman Kamama said the current payslip of an MP was a shame. "We cannot even talk about it," he said.

The matter elicited emotions at a closed door meeting that the legislators had at Safari Park meeting on Thursday evening.

After a day-long induction at the hotel, journalists and other "strangers" were ejected from the room where they were meeting.

Speaking to Saturday Nation, most of the MPs said the current salary was too little for an MP and threatened to do everything possible to overturn the decision by the Serem-led salaries team which sets the salaries of public servants, including crippling operations of government.

Sources in the meeting said the plan was to have the definition of a State officer amended to exclude them. The MPs are expected to hold a kamukunji (an informal meeting) with the Speaker on Thursday.

Richter Karuri: Tell them to resign and go home. Most Kenyans ern less than a dollar a day. Les than 80bob. Hmn! same hyenas.

MuthigiWaithekai9: If any MP feels that the salary is too little, they should resign and go back to the work they were doing before they got elected. There are millions of Kenyans who would gratefully accept a Kshs. 532,500 monthly salary. When they say a half-million shilling salary is a shame, what message are they sending to the teachers, nurses and doctors who earn just a fraction of that and yet have to put in real work?

Salaries and Remuneration Commission chairperson, Sarah Serem addressing the media in her office in Nairobi on 13th May 2013.

Posted Monday, May 13 2013 at 11:14

In Summary

  • She added that the salaries of SRC commissioners have not been reviewed upwards as some MPs are claiming and that the commission will not review its own salaries.

The salaries of Members of Parliament and County Representatives will not be reviewed upwards until the economy improves, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has maintained.

The SRC chairperson Sarah Serem said the commission will not be intimidated by threats from the elected leaders.

"This issue of intimidation is not something we will stop to listen to," she told journalists in a press conference on Monday.

She added that the salaries of SRC commissioners have not been reviewed upwards as some MPs are claiming and that the commission will not review its own salaries.

The MPs had tabled a petition to remove members of the commission that sets and reviews salaries for State officers in a move to clear obstacles in their search for a higher pay.

MPs have argued that SRC did not arrive at the Sh532,500 they are to be paid after an evaluation of their jobs but by simple arithmetic.
