Tanzania ilipiga kura inayounga mkono Azimio la Umoja wa Mataifa juu ya Haki za Watu wa Asili (UNDRIP) mwaka 2007, lakini haiitambui kuwepo kwa watu wa asili kama wamasai na haina sera au sheria maalum kuhusu watu wa asili;

Breaking: European Parliament calls out Maasai evictions from iconic Serengeti landscape

In a groundbreaking move, the European Parliament has condemned evictions of Indigenous Maasai communities under the guise of conservation. It also stressed that Indigenous rights are a non-negotiable prerequisite for any conservation initiative.

The resolution, passed with resounding support today, comes after attempts to evict the Maasai people from Tanzania’s world-famous Serengeti ecosystem.

Violence and arbitrary arrests of community leaders have made headlines since last year. Tanzanian authorities continue to pressure the Maasai to leave their land in Loliondo and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where they have lived for generations. The government has also prevented independent investigations.

The Maasai have called the attempts to steal their land a “catastrophe”, and called on European governments and conservation organizations to end support for this model of conservation.

Fiore Longo, head of Survival International’s Decolonize Conservation campaign, said today: “This resolution states clearly what we in Survival have been saying for many years: human rights abuses in the name of conservation must stop now. It also affirms that the Maasai evictions are not just a Tanzanian problem, they are a European problem too. Similar violations are happening all around the world, funded by European tax payers' money and with the support of big conservation organizations, based in our countries, who keep promoting a racist and colonialist model of conservation.”

Notes to the editors:

This decision of the European Parliament comes just a day before Maasai-lawyer and activist Joseph Oleshangay will lead a protest in front of the Frankfurt Zoological Society (ZFS) in Frankfurt, Germany. FZS, whom the Maasai have called their "number one enemy", supports the fortress conservation model in the Serengeti ecosystem.

The Tanzanian government must halt its forcible evictions of Maasai communities, say MEPs

On Thursday, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the human rights situation in Tanzania.

MEPs urge the Tanzanian government to immediately halt ongoing forcible evictions of Maasai communities in the country’s Ngorongoro District due to, among other reasons, plans to turn large parts of traditional grazing lands in the Loliondo Area into a game reserve.

Pointing to the importance of guaranteeing the safe return of these communities, the resolution stresses their right to access to justice and for effective remedies for victims.

Parliament also calls on the Tanzanian government to recognise and protect the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities, and to acknowledge the lands and resources that the Maasai communities have managed for generations and their role in maintaining wildlife and biodiversity.

MEPs urge the Tanzanian government to allow UN and EU institutions observation visits to the concerned areas. They also call on the European Commission to report to the European Parliament on EU budget support programmes and other initiatives in Tanzania, with particular attention to projects dealing with biodiversity loss and climate change and to human rights safeguards.

The resolution was adopted by 493 votes in favour, 29 against with 17 abstentions.

Nchi tegemezi haina uhuru!

Matusi hayakusaidii kupata maendeleo bali yanadumaza akili yako!!
Ila wamasai lazima watoke Ngorongoro
