Inaelezwa kuwa mzozo mkubwa umejitokeza kati ya Serikali ya #Angola na Familia ya Rais #JoseDosSantos baada ya Rais João Lourenço kuamuru kuundwa kwa tume ya Serikali kupanga mazishi ya kitaifa kwa mtangulizi wake, na kusema anategemea kila mtu kuhudhuria ikiwa ni pamoja na familia yake iliyopo nje ya nchi

Familia ya Marehemu ikiongozwa na wanawe, imekataa mpango huo, ikisema Baba yao alitaka kuzikwa Barcelona kwa sababu ambazo hazijawekwa wazi na kutaka matakwa ya baba yao yaheshimiwe

Aidha, Wakili wa Dos Santos, Cármen Varela na timu ya wanasheria wake wameshutumu "shinikizo" kutoka kwa serikali ya Angola, ambayo inaripotiwa kuwatuma maafisa wa serikali kuchukua mwili huo Barcelona na kuurejesha Angola kwa ajili ya maziko

A row has erupted over the burial of former Angola President José Eduardo dos Santos who died on Friday at a Spanish hospital.

The dispute arose after President João Lourenço decreed the setting up of a government commission to arrange a state funeral for his predecessor in the capital Luanda.

The family, led by his sons, rejected the plan, saying their patriarch wished to be laid to rest in Barcelona for undisclosed reasons. They demanded that their father’s wishes be respected.

Welwitchia dos Santos, a daughter, opposed the state funeral plan due to their disagreements with the Angolan government.

"What are you to my father? Are you his eldest son? Who gave you permission, the effrontery, to be inviting me to my own father's funeral?" she questioned President Lourenço in a voice message sent to journalists.

On Friday, the president said the Angolan government would organise the funeral and he was counting on everyone, including the family "who are abroad ", to attend.

Welwitchia and her sister Isabel, who is facing corruption-related legal proceedings in several countries, have kept off Angola for years, claiming political persecution and fearing for their lives.

Meanwhile, Spanish judicial authorities have agreed to perform an autopsy on the body of the fallen leader at the request of his daughter.

According to Lusa, the Portuguese news agency, the decision of Juzgado de Guardia de Barcelona was made following a request by Tchizé dos Santos' lawyer Cármen Varela.

Cármen Varela and Molins Defensa Penal's team of lawyers have denounced "pressure" from the Angolan government, which has reportedly sent state officials to take the body.

Are you serious Sam, Siasa ni unafiki mkubwa, he is no longer a public asset but a huge liability. Hastahili kabisa kufanyiwa mazishi ya Kitaifa, imebidi waanze mwanzo tena, na utajiri wote wa mafuta, wanaanza upya! So sad! Kutomfanyia mazishi ya Kitaifa linaweza kuwa ni somo kubwa, kuliko kudanganya Waangola kuwa ni Hero! Uovu wake umefuta kabisa mema yake.
Kwa upande wa watoto wa Dos Santos, iko upande wao, lakini ndugu yao yuko Jela angola kwa ubadhirifu wa wa mali, dada yao mkubwa anaweza hata kupigwa mawe akitokea msibani na ana arrest warrant, Je utataka Mzee wako azikwe huko? Serikali ya Angola isiwe na unafiki, itaonekana kituko ulimwenguni, angalau watoto wameamua kuwa wakweli na wana sababu ya msingi kwa Mzee Santos kutozikwa Angola.

Most of the population still lives in poverty, a sharp contrast to the luxurious lifestyle of the Angolan elite, mostly formed during the dos Santos’ era. His eldest daughter Isabel came to be Africa’s richest woman with an estimated fortune of $3.5bn, according to a Forbes’ 201 evaluation.

Critics say under his rule anyone who dared to criticise him or his family could either be persecuted or arrested at the time, including journalists, activists and other dissidents.

One of the cases that came to represent the violation of human rights was the 2015 arrest of young activists for reading a book on democracy.

Lourenco, dos Santos’s defence minister who came to power in September 2017, launched an anti-corruption crackdown after his mentor’s exit from power.

But things became turbo-charged in 2020 after Luanda Leaks, an investigation carried out by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists exposed how Isabel dos Santos allegedly embezzled public money from Angola to build her billion-dollar empire.

The state charged her with money laundering, forgery and other financial crimes relating to her time in charge of Angola’s national oil company, Sonangol – a role she was appointed to by her father. Her assets were seized and another sibling was sentenced to five years in prison for embezzling up to $500m during his tenure as head of Angola’s sovereign wealth fund. (From Aljazeera)
