South Africa: Pres Ramaphosa gets J&J jab as COVID vaccination kicks off in Cape Town
Mandatory credit: GCIS2021 South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa received an injection of the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine along with health workers in Cape Town as the country's vaccination campaign kicked off on Wednesday.
Ramaphosa could be seen entering the Khayelitsha hospital followed by the cameras and joking with the press and the medics. Labour ward sister Zoliswa Gidi-Dyos who became the first vaccinee in the country can be seen in the footage receiving the same vaccine.
A total of 16 health workers were vaccinated at the hospital on Wednesday. The American multinational's vaccine differs from many already on the market as it follows a single dose regimen and utilises an adenovirus as a vector, unlike the mRNA method followed by the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna jabs.
South Africa is the first country in the world to roll-out the J&J vaccine, of which it currently has 80,000 doses, with a further 500,000 set to arrive this month.
Earlier the country ceased using the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine, which it has some 1.5 million doses of already, amid concerns that it was ineffective against the 501Y.V2 COVID-19 variant prevalent in South Africa.

astra zaneca didnt work agaisnt covid variant of south africa. so they switched to another one.currently they took j&j.Talk about the 1.5m doses of astrazaneca.

The coronavirus pandemic can only be considered beaten once everyone in the world has been immunized against Covid-19, Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel said, after she'd met with the G7 leaders at a virtual summit on Friday.
Speaking to reporters, Merkel said she had stressed in her remarks to the group that the "pandemic is not over until all people in the world have been vaccinated," adding: "Everyone must participate."
"The [coronavirus] pandemic in particular has shown how much we are diverging from one another, worldwide."
On Friday the head of the EU's executive body, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the bloc would put up €100 million ($121 million) to fund the Covid-19 vaccine rollout in Africa.
