Moja ya tatizo nililolibaini huko Tanzania ni watu kujigeuza mbuni yaani kuficha kichwa chini yya majani wakti mwili wote upo nje akidhani kuwa haonekani.
Hilo halipo huku bara tu. Ni tatizo katika jamii nyingi. Na ndio hasa sehemu ya huu mnakasha. Watu wanaacha kutafuta kiini cha tatizo, wanabaki kutafuta simple solutions. Mfumo wa kifisadi unamnyima kazi kijana wa kikristo/kiislam/asiye dini, badala ya watu kuangalia tatizo la ufisadi kwa ujumla wake, mwingine anaibuka anasema Yule kijana wa kiislam amenyimwa kwa sababu ya dini yake. Wakristo na waislam wa Lindi hawataki shule labda wanapendelea kuvua samaki zaidi, au wakristo na waislam na wapagan kwenye jamii za wafugaji wanakataa shule kwa kupenda zaidi ufugaji na uwindaji, halafu mtu anaibuka na kusema, waislam kwenye jamii hiyo wamebaguliwa na mfumo kristo… Nafikiri hata huko Oman uliko, kuna watu wana mentality hiyo, ikitokea uprising because of social discontent, kuna watu hawatawia kuilaumu Marekani, badala ya kuangalia kiini cha matatizo ya wananchi…

Mohamed Said mara kadhaa amesema Nyerere hakuasisi TANU! Tukipinga hili mnasema tunamtetea Nyerere kwasababu ni mkristo mwenzetu, na tuna chuki na uislam. Na kila anayepingana nanyi, mnafikiri ni mkristo tu

Kama umemsoma Mohamed Said vizuri, na umetusoma na sisi vizuri bila jicho la udini, utaona kuwa hatupingi hadithi za nani alimpa Nyerere baiskeli, au nani alikuwa anampokea kikapu pale sokoni. Hata akidai kuwa Nyerere alikuwa anaenda sokoni bila pesa, kama ni ndio ukweli, sisi ni nani hata tupinge? Tunachopinga ni kufichwa baadhi ya facts ili kumdunisha mmoja na kumkweza mwingine. Tunapinga hisia zinazoingizwa kwenye masimulizi na kufanywa kama sehemu ya ukweli. Mathalan anaposema “the speech was farce, the TRUTH was muslims were no better than they were before independence” bila kueleza hiyo TRUTH ameipataje. Kuna bandiko analirudi rudia eti “The church declared islam as its enemy” wakati hiyo declaration is his own imagination. Anaposema watu walifungwa kwa uislam wao wakati actually walifungwa kwa kukaidi sheria za wakati huo (ikiwa ni pamoja na wasio waislam), huoni kuwa ni hisia tu ambazo zina lengo la kugawa wananchi? Mpaka amefikia hatua ya kutuma vijana na masheikh kuzunguka misikitini kuwaambia waislam wasichague Chadema ili wamchague muislam Kikwete? Hayo bwana Barubaru ndio tunayoyapinga

Egypt wanakeketa wanawake. Mara kadhaa, viongozi wa juu wa kiislam nchini humo wamekuwa wakisisitiza kuwa mwanamke wa kiislam ni lazima akeketwe. Hapa Tanzania (unapojisifia kuwa umetembea na kuzijua sehemu nyingi) warangi na Wamanyema ("Alhamdullilah I have never seen a christian Manyema"-by Moh Said) wote wana hiyo culture, na asilimia kubwa ya makabila hayo ni muslims. Kuhusu ustaarabu wa tamaduni za kiislam kuwa zinajali na kuthamini utu, na kuzuia mateso ya kina mama.... Ngoja tusiingie huko... Maana at times huwa nashindwa kujua ni wakati gani muislam huwa ni "muislam" na wakati gani anakuwa sio "muislam", kwa mfano ni wakati gani Sheikh Yahaya anahesabiwa kuwa ni muislam na wakati gani anakuwa sio...

Cha muhimu ujue kuwa mambo anayofanya anayejiita muislam katika maisha ya kawaida (mnayohusisha na ustaarabu) kama vile kutumia maji chooni, kutahiri, kusaidia wasiojiweza, huwa pia yanafanywa na watu ambao hawaujui huo uislam. Na ujambazi, ujangili, uzinzi, uasherati na kuuza madawa ya kulevya na kutumia pombe and other vices, vinafanywa na watu wa aina zote hata wale wanaohesabika kuwa ni waislam...

JF siyo sehemu za porojo hebu tutajajie hao vingozi wa dini ya Kiislam ambayo walikuwa wanawataka wanawake wakeketwe.

Usichanganye mila za watu na dini ya Kiislam.

Kwa faida ya wanajamvi tuwekee hao viongozi wa Kiislam kama usipowaweka basi takuweka kwenye list ya udaku na umbeya wa JF utakuwa kapo moja na watu wa mipasho.

Tunasubiri hao viongozi kaka tuwasome.

Mwanakijiji nashukuru kwa mawazo yako mapana. Huu ni mwaka wangu wa 20 hapa tanga mjini. Believe me, familia za kiarabu ni among zinazosomesha wasichana kwa kiwango kidogo sana. Wengi wakibahatika kumaliza darasa la saba ni kwamba mchezo umekwisha. Wavulana wa kiarabu wanaohimizwa kuendelea na sekondari nikilinganisha na mali wanazomiliki kama jamii ni kidogo pia. Wengi wao ni wapenzi wa biashara. Vijana wa kiarabu niliosoma nao SUA hadi leo nawajua na huwa wakija Tanga tunatafutana. Mji huu kwa kitambo umeiga sana desturi za wenzetu hawa. Na athari yake imezama sana hadi kwa jamii iliyo karibu sana nao. Sijawahi kuelewa kutosomesha kwao watoto kwa bidii kama pale Machame ni kwanini. Labda wanaogopa NECTA. Nitaiachia hapo. Huu ni mwaka wa 12 nafanya agricultural research (soils) kwenye Western Usambara mountains (Lushoto), been every piece of these mountains. Lakini, itakushangaza Mwanakijiji, kuwa hata ile familia unayoiona ni maskini bado ina-struggle sana watoto wasome. Naomba anitoe dosari yeyote katika hili jamvi kama sio kweli kwamba jamii ya kisambaa ambayo ilikuwa inabezwa sana huko awali, leo ni the most advanced mkoa huu. Hii haikuja kwa kulaumu wadigo, au wabondei, au wapare. The guys worked and toiled for that position. Wapo waliosema sana humu JF kuwa watumishi wa serikali ni wenye aibu na soni katika kuutetea uislamu na kuufatilia. Inategemea mtu umekutana na kina nani. Hivi kwenye laptop yako unasubiri kijana wa kikiristo akuwekee Qasida? Mbona yeye kaweka gospel music? nani kamzuia mwislamu kuwa na mahubiri kwenye laptop yake au hata kuwa na flash disc akatembea nayo. Unyonge haujui elimu. Internet ndio hii inatuleta pamoja lakini wapo wanaoitumia kuangalia madudu. Ni menu.

Somewhere niliona maneno ya kutoshukuru jinsi ile university complex ya Morogoro kwa waislamu ilivyopatikana. Imeniuma kwa vile nakumbuka the amount sleepless nights and toil ambayo many people including mwalimu wangu wa Agricultural Engineering pale SUA (Prof Salim, wa kondoa huyu bwana) waliipata kuandika convincing arguments za kuiomba. Prof Salim broke into tears in the presence of Mzee Kitwana Kondo siku Mkapa aliwakubalia. Lakini hapa JF all that is seemingly little. Mmoja wa watu waliokuwa na Mh.Mkapa kwa karibu sana (a muslim, school mate of mine, no name ) accompanied Mkapa to Tripoli Libya. He never knew what was cooking. But the Product of that tour ni Masjid Gaddafi ya Dodoma (almost exact replica of that very imposing Kampala Mosque also built by same Gaddafi). Kwa culture ya haa JF hiyo ni "nothing" Ukiuliza walio-serve under Mkapa (the inner group staff), the guy used to fast ramadhani na his muslim staff. A catholic.

Huwa najiuliza sana Mwanakijiji; Hivi leo Kikwete akienda kuomba ufadhili wa ujenzi wa a better Cathedral kupita ile ya pale forodhani front kwa ajili ya Dodoma, assuming akapewa. Hawa wanaopiga kelele na kuchonganisha watu kwa uislamu na ukiristo watamwacha kweli? Hutasikia wakikubali ahudhurie baraza la maulid tena. Wakae na Kafiri???? That is the sad side of this community.

Namshukuru sana Mungu kuwa kazi nayofanya ina contact na ground zero. Najua ground zero wanataka kujengewa matumaini kuwa "come on guys you can make it, just work and plan hard". Lakini ukiisikiliza sana jumuiya ya KEYBOARD utasahau wajibu wako to ground zero. Ili ku-illustrate kuwa hawa jamaa akili zao ni ndogo sana huwa huwajui baba na mama yako wanaweza kuwa ni wakiristo huku wewe ni mwislamu. Kwa wao landscape yote ni miti hawajui kuna majani chini.

The Limits of "Suffering without Bitterness"
[SIZE=+0]In his moving farewell speech at the Diamond Jubilee Hall on 4th November, 1985 Mwalimu Nyerere made two statements, of great moment, about Muslims in Tanzania. In a way, those statements encapsulate and crystallise both Tanzania's looming political tragedy and the fading hopes of averting it. In the first part Nyerere paid glowing tribute to Muslims for their political maturity and patience, qualities which greatly contributed to the country's enduring peace. He acknowledged the existence of enormous religious disparities against Muslims in education and employment when the country became independent. And that the inferior status of Muslims was so conspicuous that it could have easily been used to divide the nation. He said that attempts were indeed made to use those imbalances to disrupt the unity and solidarity of Tanzanians, but Muslims spurned them. In the second part Mwalimu Nyerere expressed his satisfaction that as he was stepping down from government leadership Tanzania had already successfully rectified whatever imbalances that existed between Christians and Muslims in education and employment.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=+0]Nyerere's second statement has baffled me, and I hope many other Tanzanians since. And like many Tanzanians also, I have too much respect for Mwalimu to accuse him of lying. But how could he commit such a grave factual error in his public farewell speech? There are several logical possibilities. The first one is that he sincerely believed religious imbalances had been redressed. It is a possibility which is difficult to accept. Throughout his political career Nyerere kept himself very well informed about local and international affairs. The position of Muslims in Tanzania is a subject which even the dullest students could hazard a correct answer, how could their teacher, and one who ruled the country for twenty five years, have got it so wrong? The other possibility is that Nyerere like everyone else knew that those imbalances had not been corrected and that in some cases like political appointments the Muslims were even worse off in 1985 than they were in the early sixties. Nyerere had promised Muslims in 1959 that their lowly position could only be set right after independence. After ruling the country for a quarter of a century and after acknowledging the enduring patience of Muslims throughout that long period, Nyerere found it difficult to admit his failure in that regard. But again that is very uncharacteristic of Mwalimu.

Way back in 1962 Nyerere wrote Tujisahihishe. The onus of his narration in that small booklet was to underline the need for acknowledging and correcting our mistakes. And in his leadership Nyerere displayed admirable courage in admitting mistakes and even failures without equivocation. The Arusha Declaration: Ten Years After is but one example. But why was Nyerere suddenly unable or unwilling to admit failure in religious imbalances?[/SIZE]
[SIZE=+0]We may never know why Mwalimu made that puzzling statement but many Muslims have been forced to suspect a trace of religious prejudice against them. One can understand why in his book, Said (1998) has described that speech as a "farce". Muslims argue that Nyerere could not have possibly been ignorant of their situation. Nor could he have been embarrassed by his failure to keep his promise. For if that were the case he could have easily ignored that subject altogether as he had done throughout his rule as president. He was under no pressure to raise it. Nyerere not only raised the matter but also attempted to close the Muslim file by misrepresenting it. It was mentioned in chapter one how Nyerere, a Catholic, had vowed to do everything in his power to strengthen Catholicism in Tanzania. Was Nyerere afraid that the new president, a Muslim, would also misuse his power to strengthen Islam in the country? In any case, Nyerere had failed to fulfil his promise.

Why was he now deliberately discouraging future leaders from addressing that problem? Did he believe Muslims would perpetually continue with their suffering without any bitterness? A year before Nyerere made that statement Mazrui and Tidy (1984:377-378) noted in their book, Nationalism and New States in Africa that the political leverage of Muslims in Tanzania was well below commensurate levels and that ‘Most observers do not even realise that there are more Muslims than Christians in Tanzania'. They also wrote, (and in retrospect quite prophetically) that while Tanzania had fared better in terms of religious harmony, ‘but the risk that Muslims might become increasingly discontented as they witness a disproportionate share of privilege enjoyed by Christians continue to hang over Tanzania, especially in the years which would follow the departure of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere'.[/SIZE]

Kwa maelezo haya ina maana kwamba Askofu na mapadre walikutana na Mashekhe ili waone jinsi gani wataingia rasmi kwenye harakati za kudai uhuru. Kwa maana hiyo mpaka mwaka 1948 Kanisa lilikuwa halijaingia rasmi kwenye harakati za kudai uhuru kwa muundo wa chama wakati Masheikh waliingia rasmi katika muundo wa chama tangu 1929 wakati African Association (AA) kilipoanzishwa. Kwa nini Maaskofu na Mapadre walikuwa waoga kuingia kwenye kinyang'anyiro cha kudai uhuru wakati wenzao Masheikh waliingia mapema?

Lakini cha ajabu hapa ni kwamba Askofu Maranda alipokwenda kukutana na Sheikh Issa, alishauriwa watafute baadhi ya vyama vya harakati za ukombozi wajiunge navyo kama wao wanapigwa marufuku. Askofu akajenga hofu kama ndani ya vyama hivyo kuna wasomi. Sasa suali la kujiuliza hapa ni kwamba wasomi walikuwa wapi wakati huo kama hawakuwapo kwenye vyama vya harakati? Kama Askofu alijenga hofu kwamba ndani ya vyama vya harakati hakuna wasomi, kwa nini alimfuata Sheikh Issa? Kwa nini asiende kwa wasomi na kupanga nao mikakati badala yake amfuate Sheikh Issa?
