Ukisoma vizuri utaona kwamba huyu Mzee (Wamba) alikwenda Marekani kusoma baada ya kumaliza sekondari na kubakia huko mpaka alipomaliza na kuanza kufundisha, na baadaye kuja Mlimani mwaka 1980 (akitokea Marekani) kufundisha, hivyo wakati alivyokuja Mlimani tayari alikuwa anafundisha Chuo Kikuu cha Harvard huko Marekani! (kulingana wiki!) Hivyo nilazima alikuwa na PhD!

Prof. Wamba spoke at the BPAF March meeting, about some current projects and possibilities with BPAF. Prof. Wamba returned to Boston briefly, after an absence of 10 years. He was born in the westernmost province of the former Belgian Congo.

After early schooling under Belgian colonialism, he finished college in the U.S., receiving a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Western Michigan University (1968) and a master's degree in business administration from the Claremont Graduate School in California (1972). He taught Africana Studies at Brandeis University, Harvard University, and Boston College. In 1980, Wamba became a professor of history at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.


Wamba is also a prominent academic and political theorist. He was elected president of the leading social science organization for African intellectuals, the Council for the Development of Social Research in Africa (CODESRIA). His articles have appeared in an array of publications, including Journal of Historical Sociology, Zmag, Pambazuka News, and other journals.


Once decolonization began in Africa, Wamba rose to leadership among his activist intellectual peers in Africa and around the world. He was elected president of Africa's leading social science organization for intellectuals, the Council for the Development of Social Research in Africa (CODESRIA). He also served as a close advisor to the late President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania in his 1994 efforts to address the genocide in Central Africa.

In 1997, Wamba was named a recipient of the Prince Claus Award for Culture and Development which cited his "scholarly contribution to the development of African philosophy and for sparking off the philosophical debate on social and political themes in Africa."


After Laurent Kabila was installed as President under considerable controversy, Professor Wamba was unanimously elected head of the liberation organization called Rally for Congolese Democracy. Following the Inter-Congolese Dialogue that ended the war, Wamba became a prominent member of the new government serving as a member of the national Senate and worked on drafting a new constitution to guide the process of building peace and democracy.

Huwa namtania sana Miss Thang, namwambia "ukimaliza Ph.D yako I will get such a kick out of calling you Dr (her name)". Akisikia hivyo huwa ana ni shoot down kichizi, hataki kuitwa Dr. outside of academic circles, anataka nimuite jina lake kama sasa tu.

Nchi nyingine, depending on the circles, ukiwa una parade Ph.D unaonekana a failure, a pretentious nerd. Wajanja walikuwa kwenye Ph.D track wameanzisha Google huko, wewe unaenda kuwa Ph.D unaenda kulipwa a measly sum na kufundisha some ungrateful brats.

Ndiyo maana unakuta mtu kama Nyerere, aliyejimix ma Edinburgh huko kitambo, hata kujinadi na u Dokta wa kupewa huwezi kumsikia.

Yeye alishajipa u Dokta wake mwenyewe wa Kiafrika tangu zamani. Mwalimu. Which is basically what the Doctor in Ph.D is. Dotori.

Sasa Nyerere was original in that. He created a uniquely Tanzanian and uniquely Nyerereist honorific. Kiasi kwamba hata Mwinyi, ambaye naye alikuqa mwalimu, hakuitwa "Mwalimu Mwinyi".

Kweli, nilisahau 'Senior Lecturer'.

Tukizungumzia kielimu inakuwa ni sawa. Ndiyo maana nikasema 'PhD and other requirements' kama vigezo vya kumpandisha mtu kutoka kwenye nafasi ya 'Lecturer' ama 'Senior Lecturer' kwenda kuwa 'Associate Professor'; na associate prof. kuwa 'Professor'.

Nafahamu huo utaratibu. Nasikia hata UDSM wameanzisha huo utaratibu katika PhD program ya political sciences. Ambapo hata mtu mwenye Bachelor's anaweza kwenda moja kwa moja kwenye hiyo program. Utaratibu huu ni common sana katika vyuo vikuu vya Marekani.

Kuhusu UDSM mtu kuwa full prof. bila ya kuwa na PhD, sidhani kama bado kuna utaratibu huo. Watu wanavyobaniwa tu kuwa promoted, sembuse kupata 'mteremko' huo?!?

Lakini tukizungumzia elimu tu, mtu mwenye PhD ana elimu kubwa kwenye kitu alichobobea kuliko full professor mwenye Master's,asiyebobea kwenye kitu hicho.

We tend to look at PhDs and Proffessors as people with infinite knowlede,the ones with answers to all our problems,while nothing could be further from the truth.PhDs,EngD,Postdocs,Professors and the likes are very good in a very pointy part of a pointy section of human Knowledge.Unless ukubwa wa Elimu unaouzungumzia hapa unamaanisha wingi wa machapisho,kwenye mada husika.

So if i were to assemble several PhDs in my Team, a Professor and an MSc with very good working experience, i might end up listening more and more to the MSc because at least he didn't spend a lot of time focusing in that pointy corner. A PhD with a Lengthy work experience gets you a better pick overall, But a PhD removed from the confines of his specialization is progress's worst nightmare.A Professor messing around at the opposite corner of this circle is as dangerous as a person who never left the middle of the circle.

Kiranga this cicrle is the reason that Miss Thang of yours wont feel flattered being called Dr. Outside her Academics circle, because at least then she is surrounded by folks who took a similiar path as her.

So what does a Proffesor stand in this circle?

Pick a point right in the middle of that point called PhD. then start a painful journey to a pointy end of the circle of the point you just picked.

Right there at that lonelly corner of that pointy PhD corner lies the depth of knowledge the Mighty Professor has.It is an extremely narrow and focused position to be of any use outside the confinement of his/her academic circle.

And that my friend is why Proffesors don't make good leaders.

Yeyote anayefuatilia masuala ya mitazamo, jinsia na UKIMWI alitarajia kuwa ilikuwa ni lazima Dr Kitila awe Associate Profesa muda wowote.

Ameandika sana ndani ya muda mfupi. Ukitaka kujua, m-google kama anavyopenda kusema mwenyewe 'we should be able to find you at least on google scholar'.

Tena hapo alipigwa break na kanuni ya kumlazimisha mtu kukitumikia cheo chake kwa angalau miaka mitatu mfululizo. Vinginevyo, angeweza kuwa Profesa mapema zaidi.

Hongera aliyekuwa mwalimu wangu kipindi kile tunamwita Dk Mkumbo. Umewaacha wazee wengi pale pale ulipowakuta. Miaka 20 bado ni ma-senior lecturers.
