Tatars​

Tatar, also spelled Tartar, any member of several Turkic-speaking peoples that collectively numbered more than 20 million in the late 20th century and lived mainly in west-central Russia along the central course of the Volga River and its tributary, the Kama, and thence east to the Ural Mountains.

The name Tatar first appeared among nomadic tribes living in northeastern Mongolia and the area around Lake Baikal from the 5th century ce. Unlike the Mongols, these peoples spoke a Turkic language, and they may have been related to the Cuman or Kipchak peoples.

The Crimean Tatars had their own history in the modern period. They formed the basis of the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, which was set up by the Soviet government in 1921.

Chechens​

The Chechens, historically also known as Kisti and Durdzuks, are a Northeast Caucasian ethnic group of the Nakh peoples native to the North Caucasus. They are the largest ethnic group of the North Caucasus and refer to themselves as Nokhchiy.

Chechen people have their origins in the broader Nakh group. Gradually, over the course of a prolonged period, the Chechen people developed a distinct language and ethnic identity from the broader Nakh.

The origins of the Nakh are a subject of historical debate. Some say they were the very first people to arrive in their region; others disagree and argue they are descendants of the Hurrian and Urartian peoples of the ancient Middle East. In any case, eventually the Nakh (then known as the Dzurdzuk) migrated at some point among the ancient people and settled the region to the north of the Caucasus Mountains.
