Mt Paektu, the highest and most majestic mountain (2 750m above sea level) in Korea, stands in the city of Samjiyon, Ryanggang Province in the northern part of the country.

The mountain was formed by volcanic eruptions which had started 20 million years earlier.

It has many peaks higher than 2 500 metres. On its top is Lake Chon whose depth and volume of water is the deepest and the largest among natural lakes in the country. The Great Paektu Mountains stretch down to the south east, and the Amnok and Tuman rivers take their rise in Lake Chon.

It is an exquisite and mysterious mountain with spectacular sunrise and glow and ever-changing natural scenery.

From ancient times the Korean people regarded the mountain as the source of their nation’s origin and their ancestral mountain.

Centring the mountain associated with the spirit of the nation, the Korean people launched the anti-Japanese armed struggle under the leadership of President Kim Il Sung and since then, the history of modern Korea started.

The Paeku area where Mt Paektu rises high is mysterious for its unguessable kaleidoscopic changes. It is a sacred place as it is associated with the glorious history of the Korean revolution against the Japanese imperialists.

Facelifted Samjiyon City​

Samjiyon, located in Ryanggang Province in the northern part of Korea, was turned into a good model of cultured mountainous city and an ideal local city.

The city consists of ten-odd dong and ri, including Paektusanmilyong-dong, Rimyongsu-dong, Sinmusong-dong, Ohomultong-dong, Phothae-dong, Junghung-ri, Hunggyesu-ri, Sobaeksan-ri, Paeksam-ri, Poso-ri and Thongsin-ri. All the structures fully embody practicality, diversity and formative art.

Environment- and nature-friendly buildings such as low- and multi-storied dwelling houses, public and production buildings, a ski resort, gymnasium, sci-tech library and educational facilities are splendid.

The work of afforesting and landscaping the surroundings of the city was realized as suited to the features of a mountainous district in the Mt Paektu area, adding more beauty to the appearance of the city.

Mundok Migratory Bird Reserve
As a wetland on the west coast of Korea, it was designated as a migratory bird reserve in Juche 84 (1995). It is located in Mundok County, South Phyongan Province.

Because of the heavy gulf between the low and high tides, the reserve is abundant in various feed favoured by waterbirds. So, it serves as an ideal place for the birds to recharge energy and take a rest on the way of their thousands-of-kilometre-long flight.
