The Burundi-Tanzania Business Forum sanctioned by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding​


The Burundi-Tanzania Business Forum, which brought together, this Saturday, July 17, 2021 in Bujumbura, Burundian and Tanzanian businessmen with the objective of promoting and facilitating trade and investments between the two countries, was sanctioned.

By signing a memorandum of understanding between the Federal Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Burundi (CFCIB) and the Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF).

Through this protocol, the two chambers of commerce have agreed to promote collaboration in the trade, tourism and mining sectors, in particular through the exchange of experiences as well as the establishment of a logistics shopping center that will facilitate trade.

The two Burundian and Tanzanian Heads of State who had enhanced their presence in the activities of this forum, in turn addressed their message to the participants.

The President of the Republic of Burundi His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye first thanked his Tanzanian counterpart for having responded to his invitation and for bringing many Tanzanian businessmen to share their know-how with their Burundian comrades.

He also reiterated his warm thanks to the United Republic of Tanzania for the support and solidarity shown to the Burundian peoples by welcoming Burundian refugees and allowing Burundian traders to use the port of Dar Es Salaam to transit their goods to the when some countries had closed the doors following international sanctions against Burundi.

President Ndayishimiye also hinted that Tanzania's support is necessary to improve business in Burundi: “Burundi is a developing country and Burundian businessmen have not yet acquired sufficient knowledge. experience in production and export. They need to learn from Tanzanian businessmen who are very experienced. We would like to work together in order to move towards a sustainable socio-economic development of our two countries. "

He said that the Government of Burundi is restructuring the Burundian airline to enable it to be competitive, and to facilitate, among other things, trade between Burundi and Tanzania.

The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, for her part, also expressed her gratitude to her Burundian counterpart for the invitation to come to Burundi and for the warm welcome extended to her with her delegation.

Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan said that the holding of this forum is an eloquent sign of good relations that exist not only between the Government of Burundi and Tanzania but also between their peoples.

As the COVID-19 pandemic hits the global economy hard, she called for synergistic work to turn the tide: “Due to COVID-19, global economies are in decline. We must work together to explore new ways to ensure business expansion and competitiveness. Of course, we are still small in the business world, but working together will help raise the economic level of our countries. "

She pointed out that Burundi and Tanzania need to take full advantage of the opportunities offered by the East African Community in order to improve their respective economies.

President Suluhu concluded by calling on Burundian businessmen to come and explore investment opportunities in Tanzania which she said would offer mutual benefits for Burundi and Tanzania

State visit of President Samia Suluhu to Burundi: Eight cooperation agreements signed​

The President of the United Republic of Tanzania Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan is carrying out a 2-day state visit to Burundi since Friday, July 16, 2021.

She heads a large delegation comprising ministers and other senior government officials from the United Republic of Tanzania.

On her arrival at Melchior Ndadaye International Airport, she was warmly welcomed by the Vice-President of the Republic, His Excellency Prosper BAZOMBANZA and was then taken to the Ntare Rushatsi Palace where she met her Burundian counterpart, His Excellency the President Evariste Ndayishimiye for a tête-à-tête which was followed by bilateral talks and the signing of eight bilateral cooperation memoranda of understanding:

– on the holding of political and diplomatic consultations;
– in the mining sector;
– in the energy sector;
– on the teaching of Kiswahili in Burundi and French in Tanzania
-in the field of health;
-on the transfer of detainees;
– in the agricultural field;
– in the field of fishing.

As stated in the joint communiqué, during their talks, Her Excellency President Samia Suluhu Hassan recognized the great achievements made by His Excellency President Evariste Ndayishimiye to consolidate peace, stability and self-confidence in the Republic of Burundi and commended his tireless efforts in favor of economic recovery, national reconciliation, promotion of the rule of law, democracy and good governance in the country.

His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye, President of the Republic of Burundi, on his part expressed his gratitude to the United Republic of Tanzania for having welcomed Burundian refugees from 1972 until today and for the unfailing solidarity that has been shown to them over the years.

He reiterated his thanks to this eastern neighbor country for the major role played in the conclusion of the Arusha Peace and Reconciliation Agreements and in the entire reconciliation process in Burundi.

In addition, the two Heads of State hailed the withdrawal of Burundi from the agenda of the United Nations Security Council and the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, as well as the lifting of sanctions against Burundi by other partners. They therefore called on Burundi’s partners who have not yet lifted the remaining sanctions imposed in 2015 to do so immediately in order to revive the socio-economic development of Burundi.

During a press briefing organized on this occasion, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania made it clear that her visit to Burundi is in the framework of strengthening relations of friendship and cooperation between Burundi and Tanzania. In addition, she stressed that she made the trip to express her gratitude to the people of Burundi for the support and solidarity shown to their Tanzanian neighbors during the times of hardship following the death of His Excellency President John Pombe Magufuli.

Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan disclosed she came to personally congratulate the Burundians on the 59th anniversary of Burundi’s Independence since she was unable to join them at the time of the celebration, on the 1st. July 2021.

During her state visit to Burundi, Her Excellency the President of the United Republic of Tanzania plans to meet the Tanzanian community living in Burundi and participate in the Burundi-Tanzania Business Forum, among other activities.
